Kids pelvic floor
It is common for children to suffer with symptoms that might be perceived to be a result of a “weak pelvic floor” and these generally affect the bowel or bladder.
Symptoms can include:
- Bedwetting
- Leakage during laughter
- Leaking whilst coughing or exercise
- Frequent urination
- Urgency to urinate
- Constipation
- Bowel leakage
- Diarrhea
- Repetitive UTIs
- Failure to respond to toilet training
In reality, the mechanism responsible for these symptoms in the child population is rarely caused by weakness in the pelvic floor muscles, laziness or poor behaviour. However, it is possible for the pelvic floor to be overactive or dysfunctional. Or there may be other causes such as overactive bladder, constipation, fear of using the toilet.
Bowel or bladder symptoms often cause significant distress for both the child and parent/guardian.
So, what can we do about it?
