Pelvic pain is extremely common – and can be extremely debilitating. There is lots of evidence it can be managed well conservatively. It is an evolving field, with more and more research coming out. However, many people do not seek help, often battling through, unaware of management options.
Male pelvic pain includes any discomfort or pain in the pelvis, perineum, scrotum, penis or abdominal wall pain. It can be made worse with activities like sitting, lifting, a full bladder, during intercourse or on ejaculation. Female pelvic pain includes vulval pain, bladder pain, abdominal pain, menstrual pain, endometriosis, sexual pain and more. Both genders can experience irritable bowel syndrome, and irritable bowel disease.
Everybody experiencing pelvic pain has a unique experience, with a wide variation of causes. Your physiotherapist will be able to assess your pain, considering both local contributing factors such as the pelvic floor, bladder and bowels, as well as broader factors. Your physiotherapist will work closely with your doctor and other professions, to work towards your goals.
The aim is: reduce your pain, manage your pain, prevent and manage flare ups as they happen – and help you do everything you want to do in your life – without your pain stopping you!
